Black Rorem 2023
Black Rorem is a re-imagining of the Black presence within the horror genre, a space where Black characters have historically been misrepresented, sidelined, or entirely erased. This body of work challenges that legacy by centering Black characters as intentional, complex, and necessary to the narrative, no longer relegated to comedic relief or disposable roles, but fully realized protagonists in their own right.
The series features three six-foot charcoal illustrations portraying Black models styled in classic horror aesthetics and motifs. These works are paired with a collection of digital photo prints that explore a speculative horror world rooted in Black cultural symbolism. Together, they create a visual language that honors Black identity while confronting the genre’s exclusionary history, writing new mythologies where Black stories take center stage.
